Gentoo on HP Compaq nc6320
So, during the last week I’ve been trying to get my Gentoo working smoothly with my Compaq nc6320 laptop. The last time I’ve installed it on the same laptop was over one year ago and I was eager to discover what changed.
The laptop stats:
The on-board TPM module was disabled, due to various problems when it requests the power-on password (sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t work). More, as I don’t have any firewire device in the house, I’ve disabled it as well.
I thought about writing all of my problems when setting up the OS, but, as it turns out, I’m too lazy to do it. So, I’m just going to include the working config:
- The kernel .config file
- /etc/conf.d/local.start - it includes support for two of the multimedia keys, as well as for the integrated SD card reader
- xorg.conf - with 1400×1050 display and proper Synaptics TouchPad support
- /etc/make.conf - you’re gonna notice that I’m a KDE person
Please note that, in order to get your native 1400×1050 resolution supported, you’ll need:
emerge -av sys-apps/915resolution
After installing the package, edit /etc/conf.d/915resolution. This is my file: 915resolution, with support for 1400×1050x8, 1400×1050x16, 1400×1050x24, 1400×1050x32.
Of course, don’t forget to:
rc-update add 915resolution boot
For the WiFi, there is Intel’s IPW3945 driver:
emerge -av net-wireless/ipw3945 net-wireless/ipw3945d
This covers (I think) about everything. For more information on how to set up your hardware, use the Gentoo Wiki.
